Are you looking for a way to add some glam to your garments? Adding rhinestones is a great way to elevate its overall look and add eye-catching sparkle. You can hand-place each stone to achieve your desired look; however, perfect placement can be daunting, and replicating the pattern is nearly impossible. Using a rhinestone template and transfer is a simple and effective technique that allows you to easily apply Be Createful Korean, DMC, or LUXE® hotfix rhinestones onto fabric with perfect placement, with a trusted rhinestone heat pressing method. Additionally, rhinestone transfers can be easily duplicated for team rhinestone apparel or larger projects. This guide will walk you through pressing hotfix rhinestones onto fabric with a rhinestone transfer.
Preparing Your Garment for Rhinestone Heat Press Application
Examine Your Garment Before Rhinestone Heat Pressing
First, carefully examine the garment's fabric. Rhinestones adhere best to smooth, flat surfaces; if your fabric has bumps, wrinkles, or loose threads, address them before proceeding. You can use an iron to apply Be Createful rhinestones, but we recommend a heat press. A rhinestone heat press delivers consistent heat and even pressure, ensuring your beautiful hotfix rhinestones adhere properly and last the life of your garment. Each rhinestone heat press is different. Therefore, we recommend that you test and make adjustments as needed. Additionally, not all garments can withstand the temperature required to melt the glue on a hotfix stone; therefore, testing is recommended.
Prepare Your Garment For Rhinestone Heat Pressing

Next, prepress your garment for rhinestone heat pressing. Prepressing removes moisture and wrinkles, allowing for the best outcome, and it's a great time to find the center of your garment. A quick trick to find the center of your garment is to fold it lengthwise, aligning the shoulder, armpit, and hem, and press for 5 seconds. After pressing your garment, open it to find a centerline to match your transfer. With proper preparation, you can successfully embellish your favorite rhinestone shirts, hoodies, jeans, dancewear, or any rhinestone garment. Preparation will ensure a flawless result and a garment that truly sparkles.
Heat Pressing A Rhinestone Transfer Onto Your Garment
Now that you have tested and prepared your fabric, let's heat-press your rhinestone transfer!

Preparing the Transfer for the Rhinestone Heat Press
First, locate the center of your rhinestone transfer. This can be done by folding the nonstick sides together and aligning the edges, top, and bottom. When the edges are aligned, create a slight crease by pinching the center top and bottom.

With the center of your rhinestone transfer and the garment center identified, you're ready to heat-press your rhinestone transfer! Carefully separate your transfer tape by peeling the white backing to expose the adhesive side. Place your transfer on your garment, ensuring the rhinestones face up, and align the center fold of your garment with the crease in your transfer.
Be cautious when moving or adjusting the design, as this can cause the rhinestones to shift on the transfer sheet. If this happens, lift the transfer off the garment and carefully reposition the rhinestones.

Once the design is centered, leveled, and positioned correctly on the garment, place a Teflon sheet over it to protect your project. We suggest adding a barrier, such as a Teflon sheet, unwaxed parchment, or butcher paper, inside the shirt to prevent staining. Placing a Teflon sheet between the front and back of your garment before heat pressing prevents glue from bleeding through the fabric, which can cause the two layers to adhere.
Using the Rhinestone Heat Press On Your Transfer

Set your rhinestone heat press temperature to 335 degrees, use medium to firm pressure, and press for 15 seconds. Testing with your specific heat press and fabric is essential, making adjustments as needed. Either a cool or warm peel is acceptable when removing the transfer tape.
When peeling the transfer tape, do so in a smooth and even motion, going with the grain of the garment. This will prevent stretching and ensure a polished final product. After removing the transfer tape, we suggest a second press for an additional 5 seconds. This can be done from the front or by turning the garment inside out and pressing the back of the transfer after covering it with a Teflon sheet.
If you don't have a rhinestone heat press and need to use a home iron, set it to the highest non-steam setting, usually the Wool setting. Using a Teflon sheet, apply firm pressure in one place without moving the iron. Moving the iron can cause your rhinestones to shift. Depending on the iron's temperature, it may take 40 to 45 seconds. Lift your iron and repeat on all areas of your transfer. Remember to test the fabric before pressing to ensure it can withstand the heat and avoid using steam.

Additional Rhinestone Heat Pressing Tips from Professionals
Seasoned rhinestone artists always have a few valuable tips and tricks for rhinestone heat pressing and transfers, and we'd love to share them with you.
- When working with a garment that has a thicker or bulkier area, such as a seam, button, or zipper, consider using a pressing pillow to ensure all stones apply even pressure. Additionally, metal zippers and buttons are fine, but plastic zippers and buttons will melt under the heat and pressure of a heat press.
- Transfer tape is often reusable! Just replace the white backing for later use.
- You can use HTV and rhinestones together in a design, but do not layer rhinestones on top of the vinyl, as they won't adhere well. Instead, cut holes in your HTV using a template and press the stones directly into the holes onto the fabric.
- When creating rhinestone designs, investing in a Be Createful rhinestone color chart proves extremely helpful in finding the perfect rhinestone quality and color.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heat Pressing Hotfix Rhinestones
What temperature should I use to heat press hotfix rhinestones?
Set your heat press to 335°F (168°C) for most fabrics. Use medium to firm pressure and press for 15 seconds. Always test on your specific fabric first, as delicate materials may require lower temperatures (280-300°F) to prevent damage. Each heat press operates differently, so adjustments may be needed based on your equipment.
Can I use a regular iron instead of a heat press for hotfix rhinestones?
Yes, you can use a household iron if you don't have a heat press. Set it to the highest non-steam setting (usually Wool), apply firm pressure without moving the iron, and hold for 40-45 seconds. Use a Teflon sheet to protect both the rhinestones and fabric, and avoid using steam as it can interfere with adhesion. While an iron works, a heat press provides more consistent results with even heat distribution and pressure.
How long do hotfix rhinestones last on fabric?
When properly applied with the correct temperature and pressure, hotfix rhinestones can last for years with proper care. The key to longevity is following proper application techniques and care instructions. Wash garments inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, avoid bleach and harsh detergents, and air dry or tumble dry on low heat to maximize the lifespan of your rhinestone designs.
What's the difference between hotfix and flatback rhinestones?
Hotfix rhinestones have a heat-activated adhesive on the back that melts when heated, creating a permanent bond with fabric. Flatback rhinestones have no adhesive and require glue for application. Hotfix stones are ideal for fabric projects like garments, bags, and textiles, while flatback rhinestones work better for hard surfaces like phone cases, shoes, or mixed-media crafts where you control the adhesive type.
Why are my hotfix rhinestones falling off?
Rhinestones may fall off due to insufficient heat, insufficient pressure, moisture in the fabric, or insufficient pressing time. Ensure your heat press reaches the full 335°F, apply firm pressure for the complete 15 seconds, and always prepress your garment to remove moisture before applying the transfer. Testing on a scrap piece of the same fabric helps you dial in the perfect settings for your specific materials and equipment.
Can I wash garments with hotfix rhinestones?
Yes, rhinestone garments are washable when you follow proper care instructions. Turn the garment inside out before washing, use cold water on a gentle cycle, and avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Air drying is best, but you can tumble dry on low heat if needed. Never use high heat or iron directly over the rhinestones, as this can damage the stones or weaken the adhesive bond.
What fabrics work best with hotfix rhinestones?
Cotton, polyester blends, denim, fleece, and most woven fabrics work excellently with hotfix rhinestones. These materials can withstand the 335°F temperature needed for proper adhesion. Avoid very delicate fabrics such as silk and sheer materials, as well as anything that can't tolerate high heat. Stretchy fabrics like spandex or athletic wear can work but may require lower temperatures and careful testing to prevent fabric damage.
How do I remove hotfix rhinestones from fabric?
To remove hotfix rhinestones, reheat them with your heat press or iron to soften the adhesive, then gently lift them off with tweezers while still warm. Work carefully to avoid damaging the fabric. Any remaining adhesive residue can be removed with rubbing alcohol, adhesive remover, or by gently scraping with a dull edge. For stubborn residue, apply heat again to soften before removal.
Can I layer rhinestones over heat transfer vinyl (HTV)?
While you can use HTV and rhinestones together in a design, do not layer rhinestones directly on top of vinyl as they won't adhere properly. Instead, cut holes in your HTV using a rhinestone template and press the stones directly into the holes onto the fabric beneath. This creates a professional mixed-media look with secure adhesion for both the vinyl and rhinestones.
