Rhinestone FAQ: Your Complete Guide to Hotfix and Flatback Rhinestones

📦 Product Basics

What types of rhinestones do you offer?

We specialize in premium flatback rhinestones and hotfix rhinestones. Our signature LUXE line features the highest-quality rhinestones, ideal for fashion design, crafts, and production. Each product line is carefully curated to meet professional standards for brilliance, clarity, and durability.

What are rhinestones and how are they used in crafting?

Rhinestones are precision-cut crystals or glass stones that add sparkle and dimension to apparel, accessories, and craft projects. They're available in flatback (glued) and hotfix (heat-applied) varieties. Crafters, designers, and studios use them to embellish clothing, dance costumes, cheer uniforms, DIY projects, and custom designs.

What's the difference between hotfix and flatback (non-hotfix) rhinestones?

Hotfix rhinestones feature a heat-activated glue disk on the back that bonds the rhinestone to the fabric when heated. This makes them ideal for apparel decoration and textile projects.

Flatback rhinestones require adhesive to attach to your finished product. Popular adhesive options include Supertite Fusion Tack or Supertite Multi-Grab 36. Quality flatback rhinestones feature a thin silver foil backing that maximizes light reflection and sparkle.

Feature Hotfix Rhinestones Flatback Rhinestones
Application Method Heat press (335°F) Adhesive required
Best For Fabric & apparel Hard surfaces, mixed materials
Adhesive Pre-applied glue disk Separate adhesive needed
Durability Permanent fabric bond Varies by adhesive quality
Ease of Use Quick, consistent results More control, versatile
Recommended Adhesive Built-in Supertite Fusion Tack or Multi-Grab 36

What does AB coating mean?

AB (Aurora Borealis) coating is a special iridescent finish applied to rhinestones that creates a rainbow effect when light hits the surface. This coating adds extra sparkle and dimension, making AB-coated rhinestones ideal for designs that need maximum brilliance and visual impact. What is the LUXE rhinestone line?

LUXE is our premium rhinestone tier, featuring superior cut quality, enhanced brilliance, and consistent sizing. LUXE rhinestones deliver maximum sparkle and professional-grade results for high-end designs, competition wear, and luxury applications where quality is paramount.

How do I choose the right rhinestone size?

Rhinestone sizes are measured in SS (stone size) units, with common sizes ranging from SS6 (2mm) to SS30 (6mm) and larger. For detailed work and delicate designs, choose smaller sizes, such as SS6-SS10. For bold statements and visibility from a distance, opt for SS16-SS30. Consider your project scale, viewing distance, and design complexity when selecting sizes. Our Rhinestone Size Guide: Stone Size in mm is a great place to find information on and understanding the sizing system is essential for achieving the perfect look in your designs.

What is a gross?

Understanding gross quantities helps you order the right amount of rhinestones for your projects.

A gross is a group of 144 items (a dozen dozen, or a square dozen, 12²).

  • 1 Gross of rhinestones = 144 stones
  • 10 Gross = 1,440 stones
  • 25 Gross = 3,600 stones
  • 50 Gross = 7,200 stones
  • 125 Gross = 18,000 stones
  • 250 Gross = 36,000 stones

Application & Care

Can I use hotfix rhinestones on all fabrics?

Hotfix rhinestones work best on natural fabrics like cotton, denim, and canvas. They can also be applied to some synthetic blends. Still, testing is always recommended to ensure fabrics such as silk and nylon, as well as fabrics with waterproof coatings, can withstand the heat required for hotfix rhinestones to adhere.

What temperature should I use for hotfix application?

Set your rhinestone heat press temperature to 335 degrees, use medium to firm pressure, and press for 15 seconds. Testing with your specific heat press and fabric is essential, making adjustments as needed. Either a cool or warm peel is acceptable when removing the transfer tape. When peeling the transfer tape, do so in a smooth and even motion, going with the grain of the garment. This will prevent stretching and ensure a polished final product. After removing the transfer tape, we suggest a second press for an additional 5 seconds. For professional tips and tricks, visit our step-by-step guide to applying hotfix rhinestones. How should I care for rhinestone-embellished garments?

Turn garments inside out and hand-wash in cold water or use a gentle machine cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat. Never iron directly over rhinestones—use a pressing cloth or iron the reverse side. Proper care extends the life and brilliance of your rhinestone designs.

Can I mix different rhinestone types in one design?

Absolutely! Combining different sizes or blending AB-coated with non-coated stones can create stunning dimensional effects. Just ensure you use the appropriate application method for each type. Many designers use this technique to add depth, texture, and visual interest to their creations.

How should I store my rhinestones?

Store rhinestones in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their brilliance. We suggest keeping them in their original packaging or airtight containers to prevent dust accumulation. Consistent temperatures are required for hotfix rhinestones. Hotfix rhinestones, use a glue disk on the back to adhere to fabric when heat is applied. Exposing the disk to freezing temperatures can cause a freeze-thaw effect that separates the glue disk from the rhinestone. Exposure to heat or humidity before application can also compromise adhesive performance.
